Results from the January 27, 2024 Gray squirrel/ rabbit hunt

The first squirrel hunt of the season took place Saturday January 27, 2024. It was an overcast day with temperatures ranging from 34 to 38 degrees. There was heavy fog to start the day and there was standing water almost everywhere. It's been a wet January.

There were 16 people signed up, with one being a youth. Nine people brought in 41 squirrels to be scored. Five of them got their bag limit of six. There were 23 head shot, 16 body shot, and 2 with more than one bullet hole. Watercolor squirrel note cards were given to each of the winners. The following are the results:

First place Phil Jensen with six squirrels all head shots 12 points.

Second place Tucker McIntosh with six squirrels four head shot and two body shot 10 points.

Third place Tim Martin with six squirrels two head shot and four body shot for 8 points

Lunker squirrel went to Robert Smith with a 1.51 pound squirrel.
 
Youth Kent Martin 7 points.
 
No one entered the rabbit category

The club is collecting the squirrel tails to send to Mepps lures again this year. The club provided a delicious squirrel chili. The next squirrel/rabbit hunt is scheduled for february 10, 2024 it is a two person team event and will be by weight.

The First Gray squirrel/rabbit hunt is scheduled for Saturday January 27th, 2024

Rules for the hunt is as follows

 Each person will register/pay a $10.00 entry fee prior to the actual hunt day. Persons desiring to enter the lunker squirrel category will pay an additional $5.00 fee. The club will cover the entry fees  for any youth who is under the age of eighteen.

REGISTRATION: Can be done any time prior to the hunt but no later than the night before the hunt. Registration can be done in person on Friday nights at the club or by calling

Prizes will be determined based on the amount of persons entered.
Under 5 persons event will be cancelled.
5-9 only first place wins a prize.
10-15 First and second wins a prize.
16 on up First, second and third place will win prizes
Lunker squirrel only the heaviest squirrel will win a prize
  
Each person will be allowed to enter a maximum of six (6) gray squirrels for a maximum of 12 points. 

Point system scoring.

2 points for a head shot with the neck counting as a head shot.

1 point for any other hit on the body.

½ point for more than one bullet hole.

NOTE:  Each shotgun pellet hole counts as a bullet hole.  So if more than one pellet hits the squirrel it counts as more than one bullet hole.  ½ point.

Ties will be broken by the amount of  head shots. Person with the most head shots wins the tie breaker.
Any rim fire caliber can be used.
Pellet/air guns are allowed.
Shotguns can be used but see NOTE above.
No center fire calibers.
No red squirrels.  No frozen squirrels.  No road kills. Only squirrels taken on the day of the hunt can be entered.

Lunker squirrel is by weight so they can not be wet.
 
RABBIT RULES:
Entry fee is $10.00 per person. Extra $5.00 for lunker category. 
There will only be a heaviest bag and lunker rabbit category. Unless there are 10 or more people  entered. Then there will be first and second prize for heaviest bag.          
 
Each person will be allowed to enter a maximum of six rabbits.
 
No wet rabbits. No frozen rabbits. no road kills. Only rabbits taken on the day of the hunt can be entered.
 
Any person with a NYS small game hunting license can participate; all NYS small game hunting regulations must be observed.

Each person will be required to show their small game hunting license prior to their squirrels  being  weighted and/or scored.


Hunting ends at 3:00 P.M. you must be at the club by then. Club will be open from 1 PM. Winners will be determined, and prizes awarded. 
  
There are two more hunts scheduled they are Saturday February 10th that hunt will be two person team by weight, and Saturday February 24th, that hunt will be two person team by point score. Rules for those hunts will be published prior to the hunt dates.
