2014 TOP GUNS
The 2014 winners of the Kuneytown TOP GUN competition are:
.22 rimfire rifle, .22 rimfire pistol, center fire pistol and shotgun slug Tom Grasek
Muzzleloader rifle and 250 yard bench rest Eric Riegel
Rapid Fire pistol CF Bob Stuck
Rapid Fire pistol .22 rimfire Bob Reynolds
There was one categories (Center fire rifle) that no one entered. It has come to my attention that there are still many club members who are unaware of how to enter the TOP GUN shooting competition.
Here is a general run down on what to do.
The TOP GUN leader board has been set up inside the range shed. Also inside the shed are the official targets along with the general rules and the specific rules for each shooting category.
There are nine categories. :
.22 rimfire rifle, .22 rimfire pistol, center fire rifle, center fire pistol, rapid fire pistol (Center fire and .22 rimfire), muzzle loader rifle, shotgun slug and 250 yard bench rest rifle.
The General rules are:
No entry fee. Only club members. Using the official club targets supplied by the club.
Highest score wins. Ties will require a shoot off.
There is no limit to the amount of times you shoot. They may be done anytime during the calendar year. A witness to the score is helpful but not required. (we believe that all members are honest) The timed shoots will require another person to be the timekeeper.
Any sighting devices are allowed except those that project an image onto the target. (No laser sites).
The TOP GUN leader board is inside the range shed. If you shoot a higher score than what is posted, put your target over it as the new leader.
Persons who are determined to be the TOP GUN in each category at the end of the year will have their name placed on that year's TOP GUN certificate and it will be displayed in the range shed for years to come.
So let's get out there and shoot. Who knows? You could be one of the 2015 Kuneytown TOP GUNS.
In order to encourage participation in the TOP GUN program, there will be some scheduled TOP GUN shoots when it gets warmer. Dates and categories will be announced.

The 2014 summertime youth shooting program
The fourth summer of the Wednesday evening youth shooting program ended late August. We had 11 participants who all had the opportunity to shoot trap, 22 rimfire rifle and a center fire rifle if they chose to.
We had only two shooters participate in the NRA Marksmanship qualification program.
Here are the results of those shoots:
Hunter Marksmanship:
Luke Allan and Chris Scarrott both earned their Expert patches.
The shoots were always a good time and this year we added another fun shoot called battle ship. Here is a quick description of that shoot.
It's a one on one, with both shooters firing at the same time. The battleship ship consisted of a seven and 1/2 inch long piece of cardboard divided into five 1 1/2 inch squares. Shooters fire at a square and if your ship is sunk you lose. How do you know if your ship was sunk? Next year come and you'll find out. It was a big hit.
Thanks to all the adults who showed up and helped, some of you even got to participate in battleship.
NOVEMBER 2nd is the Turkey shoot. There will be a youth .22 rifle shoot. There is no charge to participate and the top three will win prizes. So why not come to the club with your children and you can all have a good time?

The third summer of the Wednesday evening youth shooting program ended. We had 12 participants who all had the opportunity to shoot trap, 22 rimfire rifle and a center fire rifle if they chose to.
This year we added the NRA Hunter Marksmanship qualification program, so there were two NRA categories that the youngsters could qualify for.
Here are the results of those shoots:
Light Rifle:
Mason Thompson earned his Expert patch
Nick Shaffer and Peter Roloson earned their Marksman 1st Class patch
Hunter:
Luke Allan and Chris Scarrott earned their Pro-Marksman, Marksman, Marksman 1st Class and their Sharpshooter patches.
Danielle Riegel and Jake McGhan earned their Pro-Marksman patch.
The shoots always ended with some fun shooting. Here is a quick description of those shoots.
Drag racing: One on one. The person that shoots their rubber ball first across the finish line wins.
Soccer: Two teams of two shooters try to shoot their rubber ball into the goal before running out of ammo and before the other team. This required some strategy as shooters can play defense.
Wooden pegs: Everyone shoots at the numerous wooden pegs until none are left or you are out of ammo. Pieces of wood flying everywhere.
The T : Everyone shoots at a wooden T that is weighted with water jugs one shooter at a time until the wood is shot up enough and that the weight of the water jugs cause it to snap and fall down.
Water jugs: Everyone blasts away at the water filled plastic jugs until none are left.
If you were there I am sure you had an explosively good time.
Thanks to all the adults who showed up and helped . Tom Grasek
OCTOBER 27th is the Turkey shoot. There will be a youth .22 rifle shoot free and we supply the ammo. So bring your children down and shoot.

DEC Announces Changes to September Canada Goose Hunting Seasons
DEC Announces
Changes to September Canada Goose Hunting Seasons
Special Measures
Adopted to Address Overabundant Goose Populations Statewide
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner
Joe Martens today announced several significant changes to September Canada
goose hunting seasons throughout the state. The season dates are similar to
past years, but higher bag limits and other special measures will be allowed
this year because local-nesting (a.k.a. "resident") Canada goose
populations remain too high in many areas. The updated
regulations are now posted on the DEC website."When DEC established the September goose hunting season in the early 1990s, New York's resident Canada goose population was estimated to be around 130,000 birds, but today we have more than 200,000 birds," Commissioner Martens said. "New York waterfowl hunters annually take more than 50,000 Canada geese during the September season, and we hope the changes adopted this year will enable hunters to take even more to help reduce the population."
DEC's management efforts are working toward a reduction in the population to eventually hit approximately 85,000 birds to alleviate the variety of problems they are causing in urban, suburban and rural areas.

TOP GUNS
As mentioned in previous posts Kuneytown Sportsmens club has decided to start a Top Gun shooting program similar to the one already being awarded to the Youth Top Gun each year. The leader board has been set up inside the range shed. Also inside the shed are the official targets along with the general rules and the specific rules for each shooting category. There are eight categories. They are:
.22 rimfire rifle, .22 rimfire pistol, center fire rifle, center fire pistol, rapid fire pistol, muzzle loader rifle, shotgun slug and 250 yard bench rest rifle.
The General rules are:
No entry fee. Only club members. Using the official club targets, supplied by the club.
Highest score wins, ties will require a shoot off.
There is no limit to the amount of times you shoot, they may be done anytime during the calendar year. A witness to the score is helpful but not required. (we believe that all members are honest) The timed shoots will require another person to be the time keeper.
Any sighting devices are allowed except those that project an image onto the target. (No laser sites).
The TOP GUN leader board is inside the range shed, if you shoot a higher score than what is posted put your target over it as the new leader.
Persons who are determined to be the TOP GUN in each category at the end of the year will have their name placed on that year's TOP GUN certificate and it will be displayed in the range shed for years to come.
So lets get out there and shoot. Who knows you could be one of the First Kuneytown TOP GUNS.

Youth Top Gun
When the club started the youth shooting program two years ago it was decided that there would be a youth TOP GUN title. The title is awarded each year to the youth shooter with the highest score for the year. The 2011 TOP GUN was Brad Sandroni and Luke Allen is the 2012 TOP GUN.
In order to qualify, the shooter needs to be no older than 17 years of age at the time they shoot.
There are Kuneytown Sportsmens Club Official .22 caliber rim fire rifle Youth Shoot Targets in the range shed.
Shooting is six shots off hand at 50 feet and six shots any position ( sitting, kneeling, prone, or bench rest) at 50 yards. Once the target is shot it gets posted on the Youth Shoot Top Gun leader board located in the range shed. If someone scores higher than the target posted, the higher score gets placed over that target and becomes the new leader. At the end of the year whoever has the highest score is named the Youth Top Gun. That person is given a laminated certificate with their actual target on the back while another laminated certificate is on display inside the range shed for years to come.
These shoots can be done at any time during the year but do require a club member to be present. So take a youth shooting at the club range. They could be the 2013 YOUTH TOP GUN.
How about we start a Kuneytown Sportsmens Club TOP GUN open to all members in say .22 rimfire rifle and pistol for starters? If interested leave a yes comment on this post.

Youth Shooting program report
Our youth shooting program which is in its second year was very successful this past summer. There were a total of 14 youths who came out and participated in either trap and/or .22 rimfire rifle shoots. There was also the opportunity for them to earn NRA Light Rifle Qualification Patches and the following is the results of their fine shooting.
Luke Allen earned The " Distinguished Expert" patch, which is the highest award given.
Mason Thompson and Danielle Riegel earned their "Sharpshooter" patch.
Ryan Sandroni, Nick Shaffer, Brad Sandroni, Peter Roloson, Aric Stuck, and Victoria Tidball all earned their "Marksman" patch.
Charlotte Tidball earned her "Pro-Marksman" patch.

For those who don't already know, youth shooting was held every Wednesday evening starting around 5:30 pm from the end of June to the end of August. Everyone is briefed on firearm safety and then the shooting begins and most of the time ends around sunset.
This years shoots usually ended with water jug shooting and it was a lot of fun. It's a nice change from punching holes in paper.
Just so you know, the NRA Qualification programs are no different for youth than adults and we did have two ladies shoot this year. So it's not limited to youths. It has been my pleasure to run this program and I am looking forward to doing it again next summer. I would also like to thank all the adults who showed up and helped out. Tom Grasek

Kuneytown Blog Basics
Anyone that is a member can (and SHOULD) post to this blog. It is the club's electronic log and bulletin board.
If you would like to be sure your favorite event, announcement, photo, etc. gets posted to the blog, then you should post it to this blog.
To post to the blog, or to comment on someone else's post, you need "author" status. This is simple. Request author status from KGTidball@yahoo.com. You will then be sent an invitation. Accept the invitation and start blogging. Simple.
The reason we don't have a traditional website is because it does not make sense for the club to pay for a web manager, host site url, etc., which would cost thousands of dollars a year. Instead, a club member donated time to establish this web log ("blog" for short), so that everyone can share the burden of keeping members up to date on activities. This alternative is also much cheaper and less labor intensive than paying for paper, ink, postage, etc. for a traditional hard-copy newsletter.
It is not the club Secretary's job to post everything that every club member decides should be posted to the blog. This is each of the members' job, and its a great way to stay in touch with your club members. The Club Secretary's job is to maintain the blog site in working order and to moderate posts and comments so that nothing inappropriate appears. The Club Secretary may from time to time be tasked by the Club President to add certain content to the blog, using his or her discretion.
Please feel free to send an email if you have any questions about ho to blog or comment to blog posts. Kgtidball@yahoo.com

Venison & Meat Preparation workshop
Venison and Meat Preparation Workshop
Seneca County Cornell Cooperative Extension is hosting a venison and meat preparation workshop on Saturday, March 10th from 10AM-noon in their conference room located in Waterloo (308 Main Street Shop Center, 3rd floor). Venison is a healthy, lean source of protein that is very tasty if properly prepared. Seneca County and the surrounding Finger Lakes area have abundant populations of white tail deer to hunt. If you love eating venison or if you have had an unpleasant experience eating venison and have the notion that the meat is gamey or tough (or others in your family feel this way), then this hands on workshop is for you! Learn ways to tenderize deer meat with proper marinades, cooking methods, and meat preparation. We will also discuss the important science behind safely canning meat and making jerky. Learning to safely can animal products is a great solution to limited freezer space when considering buying local meat or hunting.
Participants will learn how to can meat and also taste samples during this hands-on workshop. They will also receive a recipe book. Thanks to support from the Delavan Foundation, the cost is only $10.00 per person. Space is limited and advanced registration is required, so please call Seneca County Cornell Cooperative Extension to register: 315-539-9251 by March 8th.
If you would like more information about consuming wild game and fish, Seneca County CCE, in consultation with Cornell’s Department of Natural Resources, created an educational web resource to offer recipes, nutrition facts and information based on fish and game that is currently or soon to be in season. The Wild Harvest Table website can be accessed at http://senecawildharvest.blogspot.com.
For nearly 100 years, Seneca County Cornell Cooperative Extension has served the people of the County, putting to practical use the scholarship and research of Cornell University and the national land grant system in the areas of agriculture and food systems sustainability; families, nutrition, health and safety (human ecology); youth development (4-H); environmental and natural resource enhancement; and community and economic vitality. The office is located at 308 Main Street Shop Centre in Waterloo. For more information on this and other programs, please call the office at 315-539-9251 or e-mail Seneca@cornell.edu.

Kuneytown Annual Patriot Day Youth Hunt
On or about September 11th each year, the Kuneytown Sportsmen's Club joins forces with Charlie and his great staff at Whispering Pines Hideaway Shooting Preserve to remember the 2,977 Americans killed during the attacks of September 11th, 2001. At the same time, we honor the many soldiers, sailors, law enforcement personnel, emergency responders, and others who daily risk their lives, and sometimes sacrifice it, for our protection and the protection of our
freedoms.

We take this time every year to be grateful to be Americans, to make a point of acknowledging our Constitution and the Bill of Rights and to be sure to never take for granted our rights to keep and bear arms.
This year, we were honored to share our celebration with veterans of current wars, all Purple Heart recipients, associated with the group Wounded Warriors in Action. It was a moving and proud moment, after a group photograph, to observe the youth of Kuneytown approaching the soldiers and offering them a handshake and a heartfelt "thank you for your service."
When you have a chance, say thanks to Steve Sandroni and Eric Riegel for coordinating the hunt, and to Charlie Buisch of Whispering Pines for donating pheasants and creating a great space for the hunt and picnic to take place. Tell your kids that you are proud of them, and that you are proud of our servicemen and women.
Perhaps most importantly, drop my friend John McDaniel, Lieutenant Colonel (retired) US Army and founder of Wounded Warriors in Action a line at info@wwiaf.org -- tell him thanks or donate to a great cause.

Thanks to Elon Weinstein for the photograph. More photos can be found and downloaded here:
