2019 Top Gun time is running out

Attention all members:
Your chance to be a 2019 Kuneytown Top Gun will be over in three days. Ends December 31, 2019.
Presently there are three categories that no one has entered Shotgun slug, muzzle loader and youth .22 rifle. Plus you can shoot in any of the categories to try and beat the already posted scores.

The club is once again collecting squirrel tails to be sent to Mepps fishing lures at the end of the season.

Canoga Marsh WMA Clean-up tomorrow

Tomorrow's the day! Come help fellow club members take care of our local Wildlife Management Area! Kuneytown Sportsmen's Club has "adopted" Cannoga Marsh WMA and we will be conducting a creek-cleanup and trail improvement project tomorrow, 10 - 5 (come whenever!), rain or shine! 


Come join us to do a creek clean-up, remove some invasive species (thorny rose bushes and buck thorn - bring gloves and hand tools), and clear some trails on:

You must sign waiver before beginning work

We will be grilling hotdogs and hamburgers on site for lunch.
We may be joined by Trout Unlimited volunteers and 4H youth!

camera and readiness to have fun while doing good for fish & wildlife!

Kuneytown Sportsmen's Club Canoga Creek WMA Clean-up & Work Party

The Third and Final Squirrel and Rabbit hunts results are in

The final squirrel/rabbit hunt, which took place today is now in the books. A very pleasant day it was. Not too cold, not too warm and the sun was out occasionally.

There were eleven people signed up,  with 2 of them being youths. Six people brought in 33 squirrels to be scored and weighted.  The following are the results: 

Tied for first place were Phil Jensen and Shawn Amen each with a limit of six head shot squirrels for 12 points. 

Lunker squirrel was Shawn Amen with a 1.58 pounder.


There were three people entered in the rabbit hunt. Two of them bagged a total of six rabbits. Shawn Amen won both the heaviest bag with 4  rabbits weighting 11.92 pounds and lunker at 3.19 pounds. 


The club provided squirrel stew and venison sausage goulash for those who showed up at the club.


The club collected over 110 squirrel tails during the three hunts and will be sending them to Mepps fishing lures. 


Thanks to everyone who participated in the hunts and remember Saturday March 9, 2019 is the game dinner and $500.00 Bass Pro Gift card raffle.  Hope to see you there.

1st Annual Chili & Chowder Cook-Off results

We had a great turn-out for our 1st Annual Chili- Chowder Cook-Off, and thanks to all that came with dishes, or came to taste and judge!

There were 10 entries in the Chili category.
1st Place winner was Scott Ridley
2nd Place (tie) winners were Keith Tidball & Barry Turner

There were 4 entries in the Chowder category.
1st Place winner was Scott Ridley
2nd Place winner was Moira Tidball

Everyone enjoyed some delicious food and a great afternoon of race-watching and hanging out with good friends.  Thanks to Kuneytown member Willie Battle for a great job of conducting the event.

Results from the February 2, 2019 squirrel/rabbit hunt

The second squirrel and rabbit hunt of the season took place February 2, 2019. 

There were six teams (12 people) signed up,  with 2 of them being youths. Five teams  brought in 33 squirrels to be weighted.  The following are the results:


First Place went to the team of Phil Jensen and Josh Cooley with a limit of 12. For a weight of 15.34 pounds
.

Second place went to the youth team of Lewis and Scott Martin with nine squirrels. for a weight of 12.18 pounds.

Lunker squirrel went to a youth hunter Lewis Martin with a 1.46 pound squirrel.

No rabbits were entered.

The next and last squirrel/rabbit hunt will be held Sunday February 24, 2019. It will be an individual event using the point scoring system and will include a lunker squirrel category. Rabbit hunt will be an individual event based on weight with a lunker.

February 2, 2019 Squirrel/rabbit hunt update

The Saturday February 2, 2019 squirrel hunt will be a by weight event. NOT A POINT SCORE EVENT. Maximum number of squirrels per team is twelve.

Prizes will be determined based on the amount of persons entered.

under 3 teams event will be cancelled.

3-4 teams only heaviest bag wins a prize.

5-8 teams First and second wins a prize.

9 on up First, second and third place will win prizes.

Lunker squirrel only the heaviest squirrel will win a prize.

Results from the January 13, 2019 Squirrel/rabbit hunt

The first squirrel and rabbit hunt of the season took place January 13, 2019. It was a sunny day, but it was cold with temperatures 5 to19 degrees and about 3-4  inches of snow on the ground everywhere.


There were 27 people signed up,  with 3 of them being youths. Ten people brought in 50 squirrels to be scored. With six getting their bag limit of six. There were 27  head shots, 17 body shot and 6 with more than one bullet hole. The following are the results:


There was a tie for First Place Shawn Amen and Brad Amen each with their limit of six squirrels all head shot for 12 points.


Third Place went to the Scott Ridley with a limit of six squirrels 4 head and 2 body shot for 10 points.


Lunker squirrel went to a youth hunter Braydin Poth with a 1.60 pound squirrel.



Four people signed up for rabbit. There were five rabbits taken. 


Shawn Amen won the lunker with a large 3.76 pound rabbit.



Matt Utter won the heaviest bag with 3 rabbits weighting 9.98 pounds.


The club is once again collecting squirrel tails to be sent to Mepps lures at the end of the season.  The club provided squirrel stew for those who showed up at the club.  

NOTE:  The next squirrel/rabbit hunt is scheduled for Saturday February 2, 2019. The squirrel hunt will be a team event and will include a lunker squirrel category. Rabbit hunt remains the same as this hunt. More details when you sign up. 


Also NOTE: The Kuneytown Game dinner has been scheduled for Saturday March 9, 2019 tickets are $15.00 each and includes an entry in the $500.00 Bass Pro gift card raffle.They are available at the club.

Chili - Chowder Cook Off

Youth Top Gun Shoots

During each of the squirrel/rabbit hunt events youth shooters age 17 and under may compete for the title of   2019 Youth Top Gun. The shoots will begin at 1:30pm and run until all youth shooters present have shot. Shooters may enter/shoot as many times as they desire. There is no cost and the club provides the official Top Gun targets. At the end of the year the youth with the highest score will be named 2019 Kuneytown Youth Top Gun and will be awarded a Bass Pro gift card.
The followings are the rules for the shoot:


Any .22 rim fire rifle can be used. You will need to provide the rifle and ammo.
Shooting Position: OFFHAND at 50 feet, any position at 50 yards. Sitting, kneeling, prone or bench rest. If bench rest is used, the forearm of the rifle can be supported on a rest but cannot be secured to the rest, no tie downs. The rear of the rifle must be supported by the shoulder of the shooter.

Distance/Shots:  6 shots at 50 feet, 6 shots at 50 yards.

The gray squirrel rules and general information 
As an individual event using the point scoring system 
With a lunker squirrel category. 




Each person will register/pay a $10.00 entry fee prior to the actual hunt day. Persons desiring to enter the lunker squirrel category will pay an additional $5.00 fee. The club will cover the entry fees  for any youth who is under the age of eighteen.

REGISTRATION: Can be done any time prior to each hunt but no later than the night before the hunt. Registration can be done in person on Friday nights at the club or by calling

Prizes will be determined based on the amount of persons entered.
Under 5 persons event will be cancelled.
5-9 only first place wins a prize.
10-15 First and second wins a prize.
16 on up First, second and third place will win prizes
Lunker squirrel only the heaviest squirrel will win a prize
  

Each person will be allowed to enter a maximum of six (6) gray squirrels for a maximum of 12 points. 
Point system scoring.

2 points for a head shot with the neck counting as a head shot.
1 point for any other hit on the body.
½ point for more than one bullet hole.
NOTE:  Each shotgun pellet hole counts as a bullet hole.  So if more than one pellet hits the squirrel it counts as more than one bullet hole.  ½ point.
Ties will be broken by the amount of  head shots. Person with the most head shots wins the tie breaker.
Any rim fire caliber can be used.
Pellet/air guns are allowed.
Shotguns can be used but see NOTE above.
No center fire calibers.
No red squirrels.  No frozen squirrels.  No road kills. Only squirrels taken on the day of the hunt can be entered.
Lunker squirrel is by weight so they can not be wet.

Anyone with a NYS small game hunting license can participate; all NYS small game hunting regulations must be observed.



Each person will be required to show their small game hunting license prior to their squirrels being scored.




Hunting ends at 3:00 P.M. you must be at the club by then. Club will be open from 1 PM and food will be provided and liquid refreshments are available from the bar. Winners will be determined, and prizes awarded.  


Rabbit hunt rules and general information

will be an individual event not a team event.


Each person will register/pay a $10.00 entry fee prior to the actual hunt day. The club will cover the entry fee of $10.00 for any youth who is under the age of eighteen.
REGISTRATION: Can be done any time prior to each hunt but no later than the night before the hunt. Registration can be done in person on Friday nights at the club or by calling

The highest TOTAL WEIGHT  and lunker rabbit will win prizes. 
Total weight is based on the weight of no more than six rabbits.
No frozen rabbits.  No wet rabbits. No road kills.  Only rabbits taken on the day of the hunt can be entered.
Anyone with a NYS small game hunting license can participate; all NYS small game hunting regulations must be observed.

Each person will be required to show their small game hunting license prior to their rabbits being  weighted.
