The final squirrel and rabbit hunt of the season took place February 25, 2017. The day started off nice but by noon there were heavy down pours of rain which stopped most squirrel movement.
For this hunt teams were able to either enter for point score or total weight. Eight teams(16 people) entered the point score and only one team (2 people) entered for weight. There were two youth entered. A total of 27 squirrels were taken.
The weight division only entry was the team of Jeremy and Jack Rosignal with three squirrels that weighted 4 pounds with the lunker being 1.37 pounds.
The point scoring division had five teams enter 24 squirrels to be scored. With 13 head shots and 10 body shot and 1 more than one hole (shogun pellets). The following are the results:
First Place went to the team of Phil Jensen and Barry Turner with nine squirrels (8 head shot and one more than one hole, shotgun) for a total of 16 1/2 points.
Second Place went to the team of John Hurlbert and Chad Schedske with nine squirrels (4 head shot 5 body shot) for a total of 13 points.
Third Place went to the team of Nate Hendrix and Matt Utter with three squirrels (one head shot 2 body shot ) for a total of 4 points.
No rabbits were taken.
The club will be sending all the collected squirrel tails to Mepps lures. The club provided squirrel stew for those who showed up at the club. Thanks to all who participated in this years hunts and see you next season.
NOTE: The club will be using the point scoring method for most if not all future squirrel hunts. It provides the most usable squirrel meat (no shotgun pellets to pick out) and involves good marksmanship.
